I know I looked like a pro, off-trail in the middle of the French Alps with cross-country skis strapped to my backpack, but looks can be deceiving. Luckily, I was with an expert. After a failed attempt with him at a nearby summit two years earlier, my brother-in-law was offering me a chance at redemption. We had perfect conditions this time and we made it to the top easily.
