The Tsaatan

The Tsaatan

It was misty and pouring rain when I first caught sight of the dozen smoking tepees down in the valley. The whole scene was surreal. So the Reindeer People were not some folkloric tribe posing for pictures for National Geographic, they actually still lived like this. An entire existence that relied on their herds of reindeers, moving every few months to find the lichen needed to survive in the harsh Siberian climate. Less than 300 remained now, and after 10 days on horseback—the only way to reach this remote settlement—I was about to set up camp amongst them.

Glad to hear of your adventures. I rest confident in the knowledge that these people exist, faithfully taking your pictures as proof so I don’t ever have to find out for myself (thank G-D).
