This was definitely a surprise. I ended up spending hours exploring ancient temples and barely passed a single one of the daily 5,000 visitors. There were no barriers, no warning signs, and no watchmen. I had very low expectations for Asia’s most famous ruins and number one tourist destination. The hype around it was way too big, I was convinced that it had to be one of these over-crowded and over-priced tourist traps—and it was, along the established itineraries… But by simply venturing off the beaten path, I got to experience this exceptional place on a whole other level. | ||

Actually Marc, I think it looks more like Tomb Raider if you ask me.
What exactly were the people crowding around, if not this?
The tourists stay around the few popular “main” temples, which have guided visits, etc. The ones you see on postcards basically. They’re supposedly the most impressive ones. Actually even within those popular temples, you can go off into corridors that are “not part” of the tours, and find yourself completely alone, it’s awesome. But the whole area is scattered with temples, so if you just start walking off into the jungle, you get to all these amazing places with nobody around.
This place looks absolutely beautiful! I love when nature winds its way through something human-made, but still very aesthetic. I’ve got to add that to my list of places to visit in my lifetime. 🙂
