I looked back at the steep track I had just pedaled up. A dusty little white dog seemed to have appeared out of thin desert air. It sat at my feet and stared up into my eyes. I gave it a nose kiss, something I normally only do with my own dog, Big. It then kept going up, waiting for me at every bend. When I finally made it out of the canyon, it had vanished. Unbeknownst to me, during these exact 30 minutes, on the other side of the continent, my baby was being put to sleep.
