Number One

Number One

zambia stamp

Mr. Mukendwa proudly presented his family to us, comprising numerous children and his wives, “Number One and Number Two”. He was eager to offer hospitality to whites who were clearly poor and cursed. You see, whites don’t wander around Africa on bicycles, they use 4x4s or planes. Also, we had no children, which must mean we were miserable as well as being a shame to our families. Finally, I didn’t have a “number two” or a “number three”—just a “Number One” who, I was embarrassed to explain, hadn’t been worth a single goat in exchange.
