The Flip Side

The Flip Side

cuba stamp

Sure, some of the problems disseminated about life under communism in Cuba are real, but here’s what I also saw: a free clinic in every community, a free school in every village, and electric wires going into every home, however remote. Cycling 600 kilometers, I don’t remember seeing any garbage nor a single commercial ad. The country felt like a detox center for the soul—a place where the main form of public transit in some towns is a horse-drawn cart and where passengers on overcrowded buses unfailingly ensure that every pregnant woman and elderly person gets a seat.

Hi Yannick, I can certainly relate to your impression that Cuba feels like a rehab for the soul. Do you have any stories that would hint at what the people whom you meet see and feel? What are their dreams for the future? Always uplifting to read your postcards, Thank you!

Hi Robert, it would take more than these few lines to give you a good answer, but overall, the people I met seemed optimistic about the future. The recent reforms put in place by Raùl have opened up new socio-economic possibilities that people were longing for, but as my postcard well suggests, there is always the flip side. Cheers.

I’ve been there too, and saw both sides. The side you describe here is indeed highly commendable. Thank you for another great postcard, Yannick!

    Dear Yannick,
I wish we still functioned with the “horse and buggy” of yesteryears, before the 20th century plunged us in the madness of highways with noise pollution, and spiralled our spirits into vexation. But back then, how would you get
    to Cuba?
    Love,
    Jocelyne
