The fact that I was only one hour away by plane from Miami’s extravagant casinos was beyond comprehension. I’d seen places like these before, but deep in the heart of Africa, where you’d “expect” them to be. Following the earthquake, 10 billion dollars in aid had been promised to this tiny country and yet the capital city still looked like one gigantic refugee camp. I was supposedly here to help rebuild, but to those destitute Haitians staring at the tinted windows of my gleaming chauffeur-driven SUV, was I part of the solution or part of the problem? | ||

Hi Yannick!
This is an eye opener. Where is all this promised money. I hope that it hasn’t gone into the pockets of the local officials, as has happened in the past. I hope that you will be successful in your efforts to help these sweet people.
You have done so much in other parts of the world.
Let us know how we can help you, help them.
Hi Wendy, I am so happy to read your comment, thank you so much for the offer to help. Although I am working in Haiti for an educational organisation, I am using this opportunity to set up my own personal project here (of course!). I can’t stress enough how much your help will make a concrete difference through this latest project… Stay tuned for details (coming to an inbox near you next week).
Wow! Truly a question which poses a realm of dilemmas. Only you could answer that Yannick! After all, you are helping them have a better life. Did I just answer your question? 😮
Bonne question! Heureux celui qui sait se la poser.
For those who want to know more and are wondering how you can have 10,000 NGOs and 10 billion dollars of aid not doing much in Haiti? Listen to this radio program: http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/408/island-time
