Just as I reached the turn off, a local drove by yelling out from his truck “Enjoy your ride to Hell!”. The spectacular and isolated valley allegedly got its nickname before this dirt road was built in the 60s, when the only access was using a trail so steep and rough that it was dubbed “The Ladder”. What I realized the next day—as I scrambled up and down the rocky mountain path carrying half my gear with every trip—is that the ride down to Hell had been the easy part, getting out of it on the other hand…
