Reverence For Life

Reverence For Life

The caged, ailing antelope was standing in a shallow, dirty pond, staring at me from across the Great Doctor’s tombstone. How tragically ironic. A tourist attraction for those visiting the remnants of this legendary bush hospital—the precursor to modern medical NGOs. The Nobel Peace Prize winner had popularised the idea that all forms of life should be respected, well before Western culture was ready to hear it. It dawned on me that his legacy was not this place he dedicated his life to building, but rather the inspired environmentalists and humanitarian doctors saving humankind despite itself, a century later.

Indeed, the West is behind the times, considering that over 6000 years ago the Chinese understood that all life was energy manifested in various forms, and that disease was a matter of its flow (yang) blocking in its intrinsic physical blood flow (yin) – as explained by the “Qigong” tradition.
